Bathroom Tile Installation FAQ
Do I really need waterproofing behind bathroom tiles?
Yes. Tile and grout are not fully waterproof — water can pass through joints and cause damage to framing, drywall, or subfloor over time. A proper waterproofing membrane behind the tile is essential to protect your home from leaks, rot, and mold.
Which areas of my bathroom should be waterproofed?
At minimum, all shower walls and floors, as well as tub surrounds and adjacent floor areas in wet zones, must be protected. Local building code requires waterproof finishes in shower and bathtub splash areas; we go further and waterproof all critical wet areas — including corners, niches, and around plumbing penetrations — to reduce the risk of leaks.
How long does bathroom tile installation take?
A standard deck takes 3–7 days depending on size, material type, framing complexity, stairs, and railing installation.
Larger, multi-level, or composite decks may take 7–14 days.Do you remove the old tile and waterproofing before installing a new system?
Yes. We remove old tile, damaged backer board, and failed waterproofing to expose the structure. We repair or reinforce the substrate as needed and then install a new, continuous waterproofing membrane before tiling. We do not recommend simply tiling over unknown or failing surfaces, especially in wet areas, because this can trap moisture and hide future problems.
Can Tile-Igos guarantee that my shower will not leak?
We follow manufacturer systems (such as sheet or foam board membranes) and install them according to their guidelines and local code best practices. When the system is installed correctly and not altered later, it provides a highly reliable, long-term waterproof barrier. We offer a labour warranty on our work and pass through the manufacturer warranty on approved systems — giving you strong protection against leaks.
What tiles are best for showers and bathroom floors?
For most bathrooms we recommend:
• Porcelain or ceramic tiles — durable, water-resistant, easy to clean
• Textured or matte finishes for floors to improve slip resistance
• Natural stone tiles are possible but require sealing and more maintenance

In some dry areas it is technically possible to tile over sound, well-bonded tile. However, in showers and wet zones we almost always recommend full removal, so we can inspect the substrate, repair damage, and install a modern waterproofing system. This gives you a more reliable, long-lasting result and avoids hiding old problems behind new tile.
How do I maintain my new bathroom tile and grout?
We recommend:
• Using pH-neutral cleaners designed for tile and grout
• Avoiding harsh acids or bleach on cement grout
• Squeegeeing walls after showers to reduce soap scum and hard-water spots
• Resealing natural stone and some grout types as recommended by the manufacturer
