Why Crack Repair Is One of the Most Important Steps Before an Epoxy Garage Floor
A beautiful epoxy garage floor does not begin with epoxy. It begins with the concrete underneath it.
Before installing an epoxy flooring system, one of the most important steps is inspecting, preparing, and repairing the existing concrete slab. Cracks that are simply covered with coating do not disappear — and poor preparation underneath can compromise an otherwise high-quality floor.
What We Found on This Garage Floor
This concrete garage floor had extensive cracking throughout the slab.
Instead of simply covering the cracks and moving on to the coating stage, the floor required substantial preparation first. The existing cracks were opened and cleaned so that the repair material could properly fill and bond to the prepared areas.
For this type of work, we use professional epoxy crack-repair materials rather than treating major cracks as a cosmetic surface defect.
These materials cost considerably more than basic cement-based patching products, but crack repair is not an area where we want to take shortcuts.
Why Proper Crack Preparation Matters
Applying an expensive epoxy flooring system over poorly prepared concrete does not make sense.
The coating is only one part of the system. The condition and preparation of the substrate underneath it are equally important.
Our preparation process can include:
• mechanical grinding of the concrete • opening and cleaning existing cracks • removing weak or loose material • filling prepared cracks with an appropriate repair system • grinding repaired areas flush with the surrounding concrete • final surface preparation before the epoxy base coat
Much of this work disappears completely once the finished flooring system is installed. But it is precisely this hidden preparation that can make the difference between a shortcut installation and a professionally prepared floor.
Can a Repaired Concrete Crack Ever Return?
Yes.
Concrete naturally expands, contracts, settles, and moves. If a crack is structural or remains active, no responsible flooring contractor should promise that it can never appear again.
Our approach is different: we repair the existing cracks as thoroughly as reasonably possible and properly prepare the slab before coating it.
We would rather invest additional time and material into the preparation stage than simply cover a problem and hope the coating hides it.
The Finished Floor Starts With What You Don’t See
When homeowners look at a completed epoxy garage floor, they see the colour, flakes, texture, and finish.
We also look at everything underneath it.
Grinding, concrete preparation and professional crack repair may not be visible when the project is finished, but they are some of the most important parts of the entire epoxy flooring process.
